2013_07_01 - Weather Safety & Mythology

We had 21 guests for the event.  It was a wonderful, entertaining, and informative 2 hours.  The weather station was presented, inspected, and impressed everyone.  The weather station was dedicated and a plaque (very elegant) honoring the donors was presented and mounted next to the weather station receiver.  Mr. Holliday and his Banner Creek Lake maintenance crew finished a superb mowing and trimming volunteer job at the science center Monday morning. Many, MANY thanks, Larry!

2013_04_20 - BCSC Dome Automation

Banner Creek Science Center completed a dome automation project in February 2013.  The automation software electronically synchronizes the dome aperture with the RC-20 telescope as the scope move to acquire images.  The observatory can now be remotely controlled from any internet location in the world.

2012_12_07 - Valley Falls Field Trip

Banner Creek Science Center hosted a field trip with the 5th and sixth grades of Valley Falls Elementary School.  From 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM, Mike Ford, Observatory Director, and Orin Marshall, Education Committee member, conducted a tour of the science center, and the observatory in particular.

Valley Falls Elementary teachers Cheryl Brosa and Laura Reich (6th Grade), and Chris Hanson (5th Grade) brought nearly 50 students to the science center.  Most impressively the students chose to skip a ball game to take the field trip.  The students had a great time and plan to come back on a cloudless night for some excellent telescope observations.

Cloudy skies prevented any actual star observations, but the big RC-20 telescope, and all the many smaller telescopes, made a lasting impression on the students.  Mike and Orin also gave talks on introductory astronomy topics.  Mike noted that several students were really "turned on" to astronomy.

2012_11_03 - Rocketry Lab

It was up, up and away on Saturday when Lucas Miller and his team of rocket launchers from Haskell Indian Nations University paid a visit to Banner Creek Science Center to present a “rocketry lab.” It was reported that more than 30 signed up to learn from Miller and his team about how to prepare and launch a rocket, including safety precautions for launching and landing their rockets...The day was supposed to have culminated in the launch of a seven-foot rocket, but problems with the igniter prevented that from happening. Still, Miller said he was impressed with the turnout as well as the Banner Creek Science Center facility, and he plans to bring his team back sometime in the future for another day of rocket-launching fun.

2012_09_27 - Westar's Greenteam Construction Event

Westar's Greenteam volunteers came to the Science Center Thursday, 9/27, and Friday, 9/28 to install recycled utility poles for an antennae farm, and deck foundation, and pergola base.  What a fantastically great job they did!  John Hochscheid and Larry Holliday had quite a challenge to stay ahead of the linemen, while installing hardware on the pole tops before the poles were set in the ground.  And many thanks to Bill and Millie Zirger for providing the superb lunch buffet.

Catching up with a lot of hard work by volunteers and our project manager, John Hochscheid.  The RC-20 is fully assembled, indexed to Polaris, and focused for optimal camera images.  Spectacular homemade galactic images are on the way over the next week or two.  Activities with small (4-10) groups will begin in April.  Watch for details on the calendar of events.
